Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medicine and healing, dating back to 1500 BC in China. Studies have shown that acupuncture can help people with a wide range of health conditions, including chronic pain. If you suffer from back pain, neck pain or headaches, acupuncture may be right for you.
What is Acupuncture?
What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that involves inserting needles into the skin at specific points on the body. These needles are then manipulated by hand or electrical stimulation to achieve the desired result, such as pain relief. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in China, but it has become increasingly popular in the United States over the last decade or so. There are many reasons for this:
- It’s natural – acupuncture involves no drugs or chemicals; it only uses your body’s own healing mechanisms and relies on balancing your energy system with pressure and temperature changes caused by inserting needles into pressure points on your skin.
- It’s effective – studies have shown that acupuncture can be an effective treatment option for relieving pain associated with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other conditions that often cause debilitating discomfort over time.
Does it hurt?
The needles used in acupuncture are very thin and are inserted into the skin with a fine point. The placement of these needles is meant to elicit a healing response from your body, but you will feel some discomfort when they’re placed in your skin. Some people describe this feeling as slight pain or pressure, while others don’t experience any discomfort at all. After the needles have been placed, they remain there for about five minutes before being removed. During this time, some patients may experience mild aches or pains associated with the treatment’s effect on their bodies (this sensation is known as “de qi”). Afterward, there can be minor bruising around where the needle was inserted for up to 24 hours after treatment—but this shouldn’t affect everyday activities like work or exercise unless it causes you serious discomfort. We recommend that patients who have never had acupuncture before scheduling a consultation so we can discuss what kind of results they should expect from treatments and determine if it’s right for them!
Where does the pain come from?
The causes of pain can be traced back to the nervous system. The nervous system is responsible for all sensory experiences and motor functions in the body; it’s also the reason you feel pain when something hurts you. Nerves all throughout your body send signals to your brain that let you know if something has gone wrong with them or if they have been damaged, thus causing pain. Pain may also come from an injury or illness, such as a broken ankle or a stomach virus. However, sometimes there is no physical cause for pain—it will simply arise from an imbalance in one’s energy systems (more on this later). It’s important to note that emotional issues can also contribute to experiencing more pain than usual: depression and anxiety are common examples of emotional issues which may cause excessive amounts of discomfort.
Who can benefit from Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is often used to treat a wide range of symptoms and conditions. Acupuncture can be effective in treating pain, insomnia, and digestive issues. Acupuncture can also help with headaches, migraines, and back pain.
When should you start treatment?
Acupuncture is a safe, effective, and drug-free treatment. The benefits of acupuncture are numerous, including:
- Pain relief
- Improved sleep
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Better circulation to the extremities (hands and feet)
How long should you expect to stay in treatment?
This depends on the nature of your condition and how long you have had it. Acupuncture is used for a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and digestive problems. The length of time you stay in treatment will also depend on what your goals are. If you want to treat a specific disease with acupuncture alone (for example depression), then it may take longer than just getting over an acute pain episode that requires just one or two sessions per week.
An introduction to acupuncture.
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing practice that involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body. The needles are fine, and they’re inserted using a twisting technique that causes them to penetrate just below the skin. Acupuncture is used to treat pain, stress, and other health problems with great success.
Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating many disorders including:
- Allergies
- Anxiety disorders
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Chronic back pain
However, there are some misconceptions about acupuncture such as: “I have high blood pressure so I should not get acupuncture.” This is simply not true! According to research by Cochrane Reviews (an independent group that reviews medical evidence) found acupuncture could help lower blood pressure in people who have this condition.
Acupuncture is a great way to manage your pain without the use of drugs or surgery. It can also be used in conjunction with other treatments such as physiotherapy and chiropractic care. If you have chronic pain or have tried other treatments that haven’t helped, acupuncture may be something worth looking into
